After a year’s absence, the ever-popular New York City E-Prix returns to the Formula E calendar for Rounds 10 and 11 of the 2021 all-electric, street racing FIA World Championship next week. The track remains in its familiar location - winding its way around the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal site located in the Red Hook neighbourhood of Brooklyn.
The Terminal opened in 2006 with one cruise quay handling almost 50 cruise ships and 250,000 passengers annually. This year it will once again house the Formula E BOSS Emotion Club and media centre, whilst the Formula E track itself, lined with miles of unforgiving concrete walls, will sweep around Piers 11 and 12 with views across the Buttermilk Channel and over towards Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.
Oliver Turvey, #8 NIO 333 FE 001
“After just missing out on a points finish in Mexico, I feel we made some progress as a team over the weekend, so I am looking forward to getting back in the car to race in New York. It’s been two years since we last raced in the Big Apple, so it will be great to go back to one of the most iconic cities in the world. The track is very technical with a number of tight sections and a fast, final corner so qualifying will be important. It’s always a hot race which is tough on the cars, but after scoring points there last time, I will be aiming to achieve that again for the team.”
Tom Blomqvist, #88 NIO 333 FE 001
“Personally, I think it’s great we’re able to race in New York - it’s such an iconic city. I have never raced there so it will be a first for me. The circuit is a proper street circuit with its own intricacies, also it tends to be hot at this time of year, so that will throw us teams another curveball to deal with. I’m excited! I feel like we made good progress last time out and hope to continue that in Brooklyn!”
Christian Silk, NIO 333 Formula E Team Principal
“It is great to be going back to New York, a track we always enjoy. This is a more traditional street track with close walls, tight turns, and bumpy straights, and hence will present a completely different challenge from Puebla. The team made good progress on the setup of the cars in Mexico, so we are keen to go racing again as soon as possible. Hopefully in New York we can show the true pace of the NIO 333 Formula E race cars.”
Despite the NYC E-Prix being cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Formula E series provided $50,000 worth of grants to local non-profit organisations who were on the front lines of providing food and vital services to their neighbours throughout the pandemic in addition to its on-going community based support.
